| To access the computer diagnostics, you have to
use a scanner. Please note that just because a code comes up
pointing you towards a certain sensor does not necessarily mean that
particular part is bad. The computer just lets you know that there
is a problem in that particular circuit. Example, a code might set
for an oxygen sensor, because the sensor is reading a very lean fuel
mixture. The problem could be the sensor itself or possibly a vacuum
leak or a misfire. You really need to have a scanner to take a look
at all the live data and very good knowledge of engine performance
and electrical to solve your problem, just guessing and changing out
parts gets very costly.
You will also see codes listed as Generic which
are codes that start with a 0 as the first number these codes are
the same on all cars sold in the USA from 1996 on. Manufacturer
Specific Codes are codes that start with a 1, these are codes that
are specific to the manufacturer, these codes do not always have a
description or any advice in fixing, usually because of safety
issues such as airbags or control items that could change emissions.
